Yaletown

A historic area of Vancouver, Yaletown is the fast growing neighbourhood in the Downtown Vancouver area. Yaletown was home of the original railway roundhouse. In the early 1900’s it started to grow and consisted of mainly warehouses and small manufacture companies. However, it never really took off. It wasn’t until the 1980’s when the city of Vancouver decided to rezone much the area and really transform it from industrial to a mixed use of industrial, commercial, and residential. Several of the warehouses have been converted to loft style residential units. A continued transformation has taken place with newer low rise and high rise buildings constructed since. Yaletown has become the place to be.

Schools:

Yaletown is home to Elsie Roy Elementary school. Lord Roberts Elementary School and Lord Roberts Annex Elementary are both within walking distance, although further away. For older kids, The renowned King George Secondary School is also nearby. If you prefer private school over the public system, Pattison High School is a great option nearby. It offers private education for grades 8-12. Another private school option is The Westside School. It offers two locations, one for grades K-9, the other for 10-12. Both options are within walking distance of Yaletown.

For continued education, The University of British Columbia has a downtown campus featuring Continuing Studies, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Medicine. They also offer the respected Sauder School of Business, providing part-time MBA Studies. Also nearby, on Seymour Street there is the downtown campus for BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) with a plethora of courses available.

Over at Harbour Centre on West Hastings, Simon Fraser University offers a full selection of continuing studies. Another downtown location (Gastown), in the iconic Woodwards Building, is SFU’s renowned School for Contemporary Arts.

shopping and restaurants:

Yaletown boasts a ton of restaurants, which is one of the reasons it has really become one of the most sought after areas of the Downtown area. Mainland and Hamilton Street are the hubs for all the restaurants. Including the Keg, Yaletown Brew Pub, Cactus Club, Earls, Romer’s Burger Bar and plenty more.

Recreation:

David Lam, Creekside, and Cooper’s Park. The best park by far is David Lam park, which boasts 10 acres of open green space along the seawall.  It offers some spectacular views and peaceful serenity.

Transportation:

Yaletown offers superb transportation. It has the Yaletown Roundhouse station which will get you to the Vancouver Airport and Richmond. Bus routes also run throughout.
